Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Do I use my VMI credentials to access my VMIconnect email?
    To connect to the new mail system, go to www.vmi.edu/vmiconnect and click on “Cadet Mail”. You will be prompted for a username and password if you are using a machine that is not on the VMI domain (your personal laptop, a public computer in the library, etc.). Enter your VMI username and password. You will be sent to the Outlook login. Login with your new mail system credentials (username@mail.vmi.edu) and password. Your password is your Colleague ID (Student ID) preceded by VMi. (Case sensitive, example: VMi0001234). Upon first logon you will be prompted to change your email password. After the first logon your VMI credentials will “pass through” and you will access your mail without having to enter a secondary set of credentials.
  2. My password is not working.
    If you are attempting to access your e-mail using http://www.vmi.edu/vmiconnect and are being denied access, try accessing your Post View account (https://postview.vmi.edu) to verify that you are using the correct password. If you can access Post View but not e-mail, please call the Help Desk at 540-464-7643. If you cannot access Post View, you are either entering an incorrect password or your password may have expired. Go to https://ssp.vmi.edu and use the “Forgot Password” option to change your network password.
  3. I have already graduated and do not have a VMI network account. How do I access my VMIconnect account?
    To connect to the new mail system, go to www.vmi.edu/vmiconnect and click on “Alumni Mail”. You will be asked to provide your VMIconnect logon credentials. Login with your new mail system credentials (username@mail.vmi.edu) and password. Your password is your Colleague ID (Student ID) preceded by VMi. (Case sensitive, example: VMi0001234). Upon first logon you will be prompted to change your email password.
  4. What is VMIconnect and why is VMI transitioning cadet email to the new system?
    VMIconnect is an email communication and collaboration service provided by Microsoft that includes anywhere access to 10 GB mailboxes on the Outlook Live email experience across the desktop, web and mobile devices, 25 GB of free file storage on SkyDrive, document sharing & editing through Office Web Apps, instant messaging, video chat, and a lot more that you can access with the same user ID & password.
  5.  Who receives VMIconnect accounts?
    All VMI Cadets will receive a VMIconnect email account. The transition will begin on 17 May and end on 20 May 2011. All 2011 graduates, current cadets, and future incoming classes will receive VMIconnect accounts.
  6. What is my VMIconnect email address?
    Cadet VMIconnect email addresses are username@mail.vmi.edu, while faculty and staff are on an “on-premise” Microsoft Exchange 2010 system with an email address of username@vmi.edu.
  7. Will my email address change?
    All current cadets, and 2011 graduates, will experience a one-time email address change. Current cadet email accounts will change from username@vmi.edu to username@mail.vmi.edu. When the change occurs your old email address (username@vmi.edu) will remain active for 90 days. This means if someone sends a message to your old address the message will be forwarded to your username@mail.vmi.edu address. After 90 days the old address will be invalid.
  8. Will my email account be deleted when I graduate or leave VMI?
    No. One of the advantages of this email system is a “lifetime” VMI account. Upon graduation or leaving the Institute you will keep your VMI email account for life!
  9. What browsers can I use to access my VMIconnect account?
    Most web browsers support the Outlook Web application that you use to access your Live Account. If you use a browser that doesn't support the full feature set, Outlook Web App will open in a light version.   10. Can I keep track of other email accounts (such as Gmail) from within my VMIconnect account?
    Yes, please see Microsoft’s instructions on how to keep track of email from other accounts by connecting to them from your Outlook Web App account. You can connect up to five other accounts, such as Hotmail, Gmail, and Yahoo! Mail accounts. This lets you send, receive, and read mail from all the accounts in one place.
  11. Can I access my VMIconnect email with a desktop client such as Outlook?
    Yes, you can access your VMIconnect account with different email clients (such as Outlook Mac Mail, etc.). To find your desktop client IMAP or POP, port and SSL settings, sign in to your VMIconnect account and click the ? For Help, then click About.
    Note: If you don't know whether to use IMAP4 or POP3, consider IMAP4 because it supports more features and always keeps a local copy of the message on the server after you retrieve a copy to your local computer.
