Commissioned by LIFE magazine, the original is now in the VMI Museum Fine Art Collection. The work depicts the VMI Cadet Corps victorious charge during the Battle of New Market, 15 May, 1864. After the Cadets charged and captured a union artillery piece, 6'2" Cadet Oliver Perry Evans jumped atop the cannon an waved the Corps forward.
The original has hung in the Virginia Governor's office and the U.S. Capital
